(More customer reviews)The front of my Honda Civic was misted with road paint over-spray. The passenger side was lightly hit, but the drivers side was pretty yellow, with a gradient in between. Nobody seemed to know how to safely remove the stubborn little yellow dots, without damaging the paint. At least one person told me that a detail shop was the only way to fix it.
Well, I did some research, and found that automotive detail clay, medium strength, was supposed to do the trick -- WITHOUT risking scratching the clearcoat by using abrasives and WITHOUT risking dissolving the clearcoat by using solvents. Meguiar's came up several times as the clay of choice. And then I found this kit: two clay bars (with nice plastic case), clay lube (i.e. detailing spray), microfiber towel (huge), and sample of cleaner wax (because the clay removes EVERYTHING including the underlying wax coat). I bought it, locally -- see Walmart, or Advance -- and gave it a try. The clay works best between 40 and 80F. It was in the low 30s, and it still took the road paint right off!!! Just:
1) Wash the panel of interest & dry,
2) Knead the clay until it softens, then flatten into a disk
3) Spray the clean panel, and the disk of clay on one side, with the detailer
4) Lightly, lightly, lightly, glide the wet clay over the wet panel. You'll feel it pick up the spots and gradually smooth out. Pressure is not needed, and may cause scratches. Be gentle. Be patient. It might take a few strokes, but the paint (or tar or bugs or ...) will come off.
5) Dry the panel.
6) Wax the panel.
A few hints:
* DON'T drop the clay -- it will pick up grit and scratch the paint (or, lay out a fresh sheet of clean plastic under where you are working, so that there isn't any grit to pick up. I'm clumsy, so I did this. A good move since I dropped the cold clay in less than 30 secs.)
* DO check the clay for bits of stuff that might scratch, from time to time.
* DO keep the clay and the car well lubricated with detailer.
* When the clay is dirty, fold it over, knead it thoroughly, and reform a disc with a clean surface. If you can't find a clean surface, then it is time for a new bar of clay.
* The clay works in the low 30s, but I parked the car in the sun, washed it with warm water, and kept the clay clamped firmly inside my fist whenever possible. If you must, yes, it works in this temperature range. But a heated garage (lucky you) or warmer temperatures will make for an easier time. It took me about an hour to wash, clay, and wax half of my front end (the drivers side, which bore the brunt of the spray).
